How to Get Long Hair in Top Condition For Summer

2nd OF October 2012

Hair expert Barney Martin, owner of the Barney Martin Salon in Sydney's Surry Hills, tells us how to get our tresses in top shape before the onslaught of summer, without looking like Lindsay Lohan after a DUI arrest.

RESCU: What's the number one long hair mistake most women make?

Barney Martin: Holding onto hair that is dry and damaged and needs a good cut. Long hair needs to be cut very 8 weeks to maintain condition.

RESCU: How often should you use a treatment on your ends?

Barney Martin: It depends on whether you have coloured your hair and how often you use hot styling tools. Use a treatment if the ends of hair feels dry and brittle.

RESCU: Which celebrity's long hair do you love and who in your opinion needs a good hair cut!

Barney Martin: Love: Kate Middleton, Megan Fox, Jennifer Anniston. Needs a cut: Donatella Versace, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton

RESCU: What's the best temperature for washing hair?

Barney Martin: Water needs to be warm enough to rinse shampoo and conditioner out with ease. Never wash hair with water that is too hot, as this will activate sebum and increase scalp oil.

RESCU: How do you deal with post balayage hair damage?

Barney Martin: Your hairdresser will be able to balance the colour out, and colour over the balayage for a more subtle colour merge. Get rid of the dry ends by taking a good few inches off.

We asked Pantene Senior Scoentist, Lais Koelle about the key culprits of hair damage and how to avoid the hair traps this summer:

Rescu: What are the key culprits for hair damage?

Lais Koelle, Pantene Senior Scientist:

Damaged hair can be caused by many factors, including scalp problems, like dandruff, styling, and external aggressors such as UV rays, heat and pollution. For example, when hair is coloured, relaxed or permed, its natural conditioning and protective layer, known as the F-layer, is removed, affecting the hair structure. The F-layer acts as a sort of raincoat for the hair strand, so when this layer is removed, hair no longer has its protective raincoat, which explains why chemically treated hair structures soak up water like a sponge. The F-layer is also responsible for keeping the cuticle smooth, which is what makes hair reflect light and shine. Also, remember that frequent heat styling ultimately damages hair; if you want healthy hair that shines everyday, it's best not to resort to blow dryers or straightening irons too often.

Rescu: How can we repair damage once it's done?

Lais Koelle, Pantene Senior Scientist:

Damage tends to accumulate over time, so it is essential to adopt a good haircare ritual that comprises of shampoo, conditioner, rinse-off and/or leave- treatments as well as regular hair masks that provide repair to nourish and restore your hair's health.
