Which beauty trends rocked the red carpet at the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) awards? We asked Hollywood based celebrity make-up artist Glenn Nutley to share his expert opinion.
This year’s SAG awards were very conservative when it came to hair and make-up. The very classic styles complimented the genre of the evening, and perhaps left room for some of the couture gowns to shine without stealing the limelight. Though as a whole, I feel it tiptoed around the line where these simple styles became “old fashioned”.
The make-up
The makeup in general stuck to the traditional Hollywood glamour, lots of lashes and either a subtle winged liner, or a classic smokey eye in basic blacks, browns and grays. Lip gloss took a back seat this year with a strong movement towards lipstick in muted tones.
The hair
The hair had no reference at all to the avant-garde, however there are some styles which I felt were particularly beautiful.

Most decided to go with an ‘up style’, my favourite of the night would have to be Kate Hudson’s. It had a cool texture as if you could see the finger lines when the hair had been pulled back, and a gorgeous line to the shape.
I also appreciated Helen Mirren’s very age appropriate classic “do”, it seemed to be effortless and tussled, not too stiff.
Julie Bowen, however, went for a more structure translation of an “updo” with a great shape and I think she looked beautiful.
Diane Kruger had a slightly more modern twist to the look, incorporating some knots and braids and a softer finish.
The Aussie beauty icons. As for the flowing all-out looks, I think the Aussie girls both got it right, Nicole Kidman (pictured) with her Boho curls and Toni Collette (pictured at the top of this article) with a loose wave and bangs. Both styles worked very well with the more laidback gowns they were wearing.
Meanwhile Tina Fey went all out, she opted for the more traditional structured Hollywood wave, which was very well executed. All round I feel the beauty side of the SAGS this year was a little lacklustre, but the Grammys next week promise to be more on the creative side!
