Screen Actor's Guild Awards 2012 Trend Report
6th OF February 2012
On the 2012 Screen Actor's Guild Awards red carpet, monochrome must have been the buzzword for Hollywood stylists dressing clients for the show in L.A. Black and white ruled the red carpet, with some stars taking the plunge in emerald, fuchsia and magenta. Old Hollywood glamour was new again and while only a handful missed the mark, there were thankfully no shock horrors.
Red carpet royalty Brangelina reigned in black – Pitt in Balenciaga by Nicolas Ghesquiere and Jolie in a draped halter-neck Jenny Packham dress.
The couple had competition for best-in-black from George Clooney and girlfriend Stacy Keibler (Geibler, Stooney?). Clooney donned a suave Giorgio Armani tuxedo, while Keibler wore customised lace Marchesa.
Emma Stone’s head-to-toe black Alexander McQueen outfit was probably the greatest fashion risk of the night but she managed to pull it off superbly, especially against her alabaster skin. The tea-length full skirt and intricate lace embroidery paired with a knuckle-duster clutch was flawless rock-chic.
Amber Heard and Jayma Mays both succeeded sartorially in black cap-sleeved gowns and swept-up hair. White worked wonders for many celebs on the red carpet. Rose Byrne chose an Elie Saab jumpsuit from the couturier’s archive. The plunging neckline and her Anna Wintour-esque bob made the bold choice a winner in the style stakes.
Judy Greer looked ethereal in ivory Collette Dinnigan, while Tilda Swinton eschewed her signature androgynous style for an all white long-sleeved Lanvin confection.
Viola Davis, who scooped up the best female actor award for The Help, was resplendent in white Marchesa with a gold encrusted bustier. Emilia Clarke’s two-toned Chanel Couture gown was a modern spin on monochrome colour blocking. From the waist down her gown was swathed in black marabou feathers, while the top half was white with a structured collar and raised shoulders.
Trendsetting stars rocked in block colours. Michelle Williams was a frontrunner for best dressed in a Valentino red frock with lace shoulders, while Kyra Sedgwick was red hot in Pucci. Natalie Portman looked regal in burgundy Giambattista Valli couture, as did Dianna Agron in hot pink Carolina Herrera. Jessica Chastain in Calvin Klein Collection and Jane Lynch and Diane Lane both in David Meister, all sported blue on the red carpet.
Many went for matchy-matchy with shoes, clutch and dress all in one shade. For some it was outfit overkill, but others achieved a seamless monochromatic look. Of course, complementing every ensemble, the requisite yet understated jewels by red carpet favourites Harry Winston, Tiffany & Co. and Lorraine Schwartz.
