Takeaway Coffee Cups: simple convenience, or health and environmental concern?

24th OF September 2012

By Keeva Stratton

Takeaway coffee has quickly become a daily essential in the modern world. Whether on the way to work, or during a break, the convenience of this highly portable consumable is hard to top. But what are we consuming with our morning coffee by way of the very vessel within which this convenience is contained?

You may be familiar with the concerns raised around bisphenol A (BPA), but did you know that it is often found in recycled cups, particularly in the lids, such as those stocked by many cafes?

While the experts can't seem to agree as to whether or not BPA is stored long-term in our body fat, most of us would agree that any product that experts suggest should be removed from baby products, should probably be avoided by the rest of us wanting to live a low-tox lifestyle too.

If you believe that avoiding exposure to such toxins is a good thing, then you may want to reconsider the takeaway coffee. (We also recommend reading Alexx Stuart's great article on the various toxins found in daily products).

Or, why not join the 'keep cup' craze and bring your own reusable cup with you to enjoy your preferred brew.

Keep cups and other environmentally friendly, reusable takeaway cups have been rapidly gaining popularity for all the right reasons.

Just imagine the amount of waste that is being spared if the average daily coffee consumer replaces their takeaway cup with one that can be used time and time again.

In fact, some studies have suggested that Australians contribute around 500 million takeaway cups to landfill every year. Most reusable cups also have a range of other benefits too, such as better heat retention, less spills or leaks—and with a stylish range of colours to choose from, they are also a great way to make a statement.

The other alternative is, of course, to take 10 minutes out of your day and actually sit at the cafe to enjoy your coffee in a traditional china or porcelain cup. This may sound like a crazy idea in our time poor world, but it will likely have more benefits than just avoiding toxins or adding to landfill—you may relieve a little stress too!
