I’m often asked by women (and some men) how they can look 10 years younger without having a facelift. The most common procedure performed to achieve an overall youthful appearance is to brighten the eyes.

Loose upper eyelid skin can make you look tired, old, sad or even grumpy. The skin fold at the outer half of the upper eyelid can even restrict vision and as for the lower eyelids, wrinkles around the eyes, loose eyelid skin, and unattractive “bags” can all contribute to the tired, un-rested, even unhealthy look.

Eyelid surgery has come a long way in the last few years, and now removing eye bags is a simple procedure often performed in day surgery which involves removing the excess, loose skin from the upper eyelid and the unsightly bulges in the inner corner of the upper eyelid.

Often combined with a browlift to improve the overall position of the eyelid skin, the overall effect is a more ‘open’ eye.

For an Even better result, Blepharoplasty is combined with a browlift and is performed by making small incisions in the hairline and lifting the position of a dropped eyebrow into a more youthful position.

An exciting new era in face and browlift procedures in recent years has seen modern endoscopic techniques used to elevate the brow with the use of a miniature camera and specialised equipment. They’re admirably known by many names; tuckshop lady arms, cherrio arms, batwing arms or as Kath & Kim notoriously call them, “fadoobadas”. Either way, the unsightly ‘flap’ can take away from a gorgeous womanly look, especially when she’s rocking a strappy dress come springtime.

Thankfully, there are ways that women can improve the overall appearance of their “fadoobadas” including a healthy diet, weight bearing, and simple surgery to remove excess fat.

Arm reduction surgery, or technically known as Brachioplasty, is a combination of an arm lift and arm liposuction which effectively removes excess skin and fat around the triceps muscle. Firm skinned men and woman with disproportionate sized arms are ideal candidates, as are those with loose upper arm skin, commonly seen in men and woman 40 plus. The third ideal patient is a man or a woman who has had dramatic weight loss and is looking to achieve a more svelte shape.

I realise that not all women can look as fit and taught as Madonna or Michelle Obama. Loose skin can cause chafing and the unsightly bulge doesn’t do much to compliment this season’s new strappy trends, which is why more and more women are opting for this simple day surgery.

In younger women, disproportionate sized upper arms mean you face wardrobe restrictions. Their skin is good and firm; however their upper arm is not proportionally sized to the rest of their body. A tiny 5mm incision placed discretely in the arm pit crease (which will soon become virtually invisible) is made and the excess fat is removed. The patient will usually have no more than one day’s worth of downtime.

The second is the middle aged person (40 plus), both male and female, who are starting to show signs of advancing age and opt for arm surgery as they want to turn back the clock a few years. These patients generally have a combination of moderate thickening of tissue in the upper arm and moderately loose skin. A small incision is placed under the arm and depending on the extent of the incisions, the patient may need a few days rest following surgery.

A patient who has lost a significant amount of weight and is looking to achieve a svelte shape is an ideal candidate for Brachioplasty, as major weight loss has resulted in the stretching of the skin. This procedure requires an incision down the inside of the arm from the arm pit to the elbow. The hairline scar is a small price to pay for a thinner, contoured look – meaning the patient can now wear a t-shirt, dress or strapless number in time for summer after a week’s recovery.

Ever since the wedding of the year in April 2011, Pippa Middleton’s bum sauntered onto the media scene, gorgeous bottoms have been getting a lot of attention. We all want that perfect bottom, but if you're not blessed with a bottom as pert as Pippa Middleton or Katy Perry's at the Arthur premiere (husband Russell Brand loved it so much he gave it a squeeze), have no fear. The most common bottom shaping procedure is liposuction. This is best for women who would like to reshape the natural contours of their bums by removing excess fat. Excess fullness in the upper bottom can cause a square or large-bum look. Liposuction turns this fullness into a perfect hour-glass appearance that you’ll want to show off.

Nothing brings more joy to a Mum’s life than her new baby. Becoming a mother brings many changes to a woman’s body, including her breasts. Having a baby and breast feeding can cause a woman’s breasts to deflate and lose their overall youthful shape, often referred to as breast droop. Breast feeding softens and lengthens the ligaments and tissue in the breasts, causing them to flatten and sag. RESCU’s Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Kohout, offers solutions for proud Mums to help them recapture the natural fullness and firmness of their breasts.

There are many solutions and options on the market, surgical and non-surgical, permanent and semi permanent. Here are a few;

Breasts can naturally lose tissue volume during pregnancy to make breasts out of proportion with the rest of the body. Mums looking for a temporary fix to breast deflation have recently turned to Macrolane. Not yet available in Australia, Macrolane is a clear gel that is injected directly into the breasts. The gel contains hyaluronic acid- a natural component of the skin. Once injected, hyaluronic acid binds to water, which creates volume. The results of Macrolane are instant, creating fuller breasts and adding up to one cup size. The effects of Macrolane last for 18 months until the gel is completely broken down by the body, with breasts returning to their post-baby state.

Breast augmentation is one of the most common aesthetic surgical procedures and involves the insertion of implants. Implants are placed under the breast tissue or chest muscle, which increases the size and overall fullness of the breasts. Various shapes and sizes can be selected by you and your surgeon for the optimal look and feel. Mums can return home the day of their procedure, but should avoid serious physical activity for 2 to 3 weeks after surgery. Breasts will continue to heal for several weeks, revealing the true difference that breast augmentation can make.

The most permanent and effective procedure to fix breast droop is Mastopexy surgery, also known as a breast lift. Mastopexy is ideal for Mums who are happy with their breast size, but unhappy with the current shape of their breasts. Mastopexy is a permanent surgical procedure that corrects breasts that are drooping and lacking firmness, and can also fix nipples and areolas that are pointing downwards.

During the Mastopexy surgery, the nipples are lifted and repositioned and the excess, loose skin on the breast is removed. This causes the breasts to sit in a higher position and gives the breasts a higher, fuller and youthful contour. Many Mums will return to their normal daily activities two weeks after the surgery. Some scaring is evident, but is placed discreetly and fades over time.

In some instances, the breast lift is combined with implants to correct both the droop and the loss of volume.

All Mums should wait 12 months after delivery and/or conclusion of breast feeding if selecting either of these treatments, as this allows breasts to adjust back to their natural state.

A Breast lift can start from $6900 and breast implants can start from $9900. It is unknown when Macrolane will be approved for use in Australia.

Varicose veins and spider veins have long been the curse of many women affecting their confidence and clothing choices. Sure, it isn’t so bad during the cooler months of the year when your legs are covered, but when spring hits and it’s time to get those pins out, the sight of them can really decrease your confidence. Thankfully though, there are treatments available to get your legs back to a smooth touch.

Both spider and varicose veins develop as a result of increased pressure in the veins, caused by many factors including damaged valves, prolonged periods of standing or sitting, or even from specific lifestyle choices.

The differences between spider and varicose veins are simple. Spider veins are enlarged veins, which are closer to the surface of the skin and present a web-like or starburst appearance. They are not painful; however cause a significant decrease in cosmetic confidence. They usually appear on the thighs and around the knees/ lower legs. They can be pink or purple and up to about 1.5mm in diameter. Varicose veins however, are larger and often appear bulging or twisted through the skin. Although many are painless, they can get inflamed and become painful and may lead to further health problems such as skin discolouration and ankle ulcers.

There are a number of different cosmetic treatments available for both spider and varicose veins. The following treatments are all effective, safe and cause little pain or discomfort.

Sclerotherapy is typically used to treat larger spider veins of around 0.5-1.5mm. The treatment involves ‘sclerosing’ solution being injected into the affected area. The solution destroys the inner lining of the offending vessel and patients start to see results over the coming weeks. Using this treatment, 50 – 90% of the veins will disappear. Most patients require between two and three treatments before they start to see the permanent effects of the procedure. Expect to pay approximately $250-400 per session, depending on how extensive the injections are.

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy is a permanent treatment usually used to treat varicose veins, the procedure involves the use of ultrasound and micro injected foam which causes the vein to clot and shrivel. A number of treatments may be needed to see the desired results. Patients will pay between $200 and $400 per session for this treatment depending on the area. This procedure is painless and doesn’t result in patient down time, a good option for busy individuals!

Laser treatment is a highly effective method of removing fine spider veins. Laser light is transmitted through the skin and absorbed by the blood vessels and veins begin to disappear quickly. The area may become hot, and a stinging sensation may be felt during this procedure, this is normal and in most patients not painful. On average patients will need three treatments to see the desired effects on veins, this treatment is permanent. Costs depend on how large the area being treated is; generally you will pay between $100 and $400 per session.

Endovascular Laser Treatment is a new treatment used to treat varicose veins, the procedure involves a small optic probe and laser light which heats the vein from the inside resulting in permanent shrinkage. Depending on the severity of veins, patients will need between one and ten sessions. As this method requires specialised and expensive laser equipment, it is more costly than others, with prices starting at $800. This treatment has no down time and is effective immediately, great for patients who like to see results fast!

Some varicose veins are severe and extensive enough to require surgery, especially if both legs are involved. This is usually a day procedure that takes 30-60 minutes to perform and requires compression stockings for around 4 weeks. Cost: between $1,000 and $3,000.

Treatments for spider and varicose veins vary in the different types of procedures that are offered. All of the treatments listed above are relatively painless and will not cause the patient to have significant down time. Costs vary between $100 and $1000, the best way to determine which treatment is right for you is to speak to your physician.

For celebrities, the quest for perfect, faultless facial skin has been brought in to focus by HD television, with its crystal-clear resolution and often jumbo-sized screens. It's little wonder that those who make a career on the small screen are looking to methods, other than caking on make-up, to help improve their appearance.

For us mere mortals, extreme close-ups on high-rating TV shows may never be a concern, but the amazing quality of personal cameras can reveal flaws in your skin that would never be noticed using old film technology. It can be startling to zoom in on your face in a photo and see just how damaged the skin can be.

Of course, no one has perfect, flawless skin. Indeed, many people would probably say that the odd scar or wrinkle actually adds to the appeal of a person's face. And plenty of minor blemishes can be easily overcome with make-up.

But if you have wrinkles, inconsistent skin tone or scarring that make-up never can quite cover up, there are a number of safe and relatively painless methods that can be used to fix the problem. They are Fractional Resurfacing and Photo Rejuvenation.

Fractional Resurfacing:

This relatively new method of eliminating skin flaws is a laser based treatment which uses light energy via a matrix of laser beams to produce deep dermal heating and iron out wrinkles, remove scars and even out skin tone.

It works by using overlapping light beams to penetrate deep into the dermis and pre-heat the target tissue to a depth of up to 2.5 mm. Deep thermal heating both shrinks and generates new collagen, leading to skin tightening and renewal of dead skin cells. Your skin tone and colour improve measurably.

Following one treatment with the system, most patients showed improvement in facial parameters such as skin brightness (83%) and skin smoothness/wrinkle reduction (90%)

There are two kinds of Fractional Resurfacing; Fractional Ablative Skin Resurfacing and Fractional Non-Ablative Skin Resurfacing. In a nutshell, the difference is this; when set on a low setting, the matrix treatment is non-ablative (it doesn't remove any skin tissue) and when set on a higher settings, it is ablative. Both systems help to achieve a smoother, clearer complexion.

Fractional Ablative Skin Resurfacing:

Fractional Ablative Skin Resurfacing works by ablating the superficial layers of the treated area. The healthy skin in the surrounding helps accelerate the healing process of the skin. Following treatment, you may notice increased levels of collagen as healthy skin cells are produced. Mild to moderate wrinkles and superficial skin discolorations are reduced and the texture of your skin will have added smoothness and elasticity. The treatment is suitable for most skin types and it is advised to space three treatments 4-6 weeks apart. During treatment, some patients feel a warm, prickly sensation and following treatment notice a slightly pinkish tinge to the skin. Topical ointments help to cool and relieve any unpleasant feeling.

Treatment costs $800 per treatment.

Fractional Non-Ablative Skin Resurfacing:

Utilising elos technology, the combined light and radio frequency current energies heat the connective tissue stimulating collagen production to help produce a younger appearance in the skin. Mild to moderate wrinkles are reduced and the skin is left with an even and elastic skin tone. Patients begin to see a noticeable improvement after 2-3 treatments and the total number of treatments is dependent on the skin condition. The treatment is pain free, as the machine has a built-in cooled treatment tip which ensures constant skin surface protection during the treatment.

Treatment costs $500 per treatment.

Photo Rejuvention:

Another method for increasing the youthfulness of your skin is to use Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) in a process called Photo Rejuvenation. Perfect for reducing signs of sun damage, inconsistent skin tone and broken capillaries, the process is non-invasive and thankfully takes only a short period of time before the skin is fully healed and the full benefits of the treatment are revealed.

It works by directing high intensity pulses of visible light in to the target area. The light energy is absorbed into only those cells with a particular colour in the skin. The light energy is converted to heat which causes thermal damage to a specifically targeted area, reducing or even eliminating skin imperfections.

Each treatment is completely painless and they are normally 3 to 4 weeks apart, in some cases patients achieve excellent results from only 2 to 3 sessions. After a treatment, you can expect to look like you've had a thorough workout at the gym, with flushing and redness, although this should only last for a few hours. Those who are using Photo Rejuvenation to reduce uneven pigmentation, sun spots and freckles can expect the treated areas to become darker before fading over a period of up to 10 days.

It’s a common complaint that after having children, many women feel out of shape, battling with excessive work outs and diets in the endeavour to restore their body to its original shape. Unfortunately it is true, pregnancy often leads to abdominal stretch marks, loose skin and stretched out or separated muscles, creating a bulge which does not respond to any kind of exercise or diet no matter how hard you try.

A highly effective solution to get rid of the loose, overhanging skin, fat tissues and stretched scars is Abdominoplasty, or a tummy tuck. Many celebrities, like Posh, are said to have had tummy tucks right after pregnancy and swear by it, achieving discreet, natural results. Nevertheless it is not an option to be recommended by your specialist to hastily after pregnancy, without due consideration. Patients should wait at least six months after child birth or a C-Section to schedule a consultation for a tummy tuck.

This is particularly important if you are planning further children, since the vertical muscles in the abdomen that are tightened during surgery require adequate time to reposition and heal and can separate again during further pregnancies. A C-Section is major abdominal surgery which takes six to eight weeks to heal completely and attempting earlier can lead to a much higher risk of infection.

For best results, following an Abdominoplasty your tummy should appear flat, firm and toned with a slender midsection in proportion with the rest of your body shape. If there is a large fat accumulation on the abdominal wall, it can be combined with liposuction for better results. The most common technique involves an incision at the lower abdomen. The muscles get tightened by drawing them closer together and stitching them into right position. The redundant fat and skin will then be removed.

The procedure usually takes two to five hours, depending on the extent of work required and is performed under general anaesthetic. Thousands of tummy tucks are performed successfully each year but you do have to keep in mind that it does produce a permanent scar. Post- operative complications are uncommon if you follow your surgeon’s instruction. After the surgery you may have to stay in hospital for two or three days depending on the extent of the surgery and the recovery time fluctuates individually between two and four weeks.

Abdominoplasty surgery cost $6,000 to $10,000 but promises long lasting results if you exercise regularly and follow a balanced diet.

While in men it’s the chest and abdomen, for women this is more often than not on their thighs hips, tummy and upper arms, particularly after child birth. Here are some safe and highly effective solutions to give you that extra confidence boost and transform problem spots forever.

Coolsculpting
Cool Sculpting creates a very similar effect to Ultra Shape Body Contouring and likewise this treatment is very safe with little or no down time. The treatment is more expensive at around $1,100 for the first application and 2 to 3 treatments are recommended for optimal results. The downside of coolsculpting is that the results often take 4-6 months to become apparent as the treatment encourages natural cell death rather than physically breaking cells down.

SURGICAL

Liposoft
Liposoft is a gentler and more accurate form of fat removal and body sculpting than traditional Liposuction. Many people live with problem areas because they don’t want the higher risk associated with traditional liposuction, as well as the uncomfortable drainage period and extended absence from work. Liposoft is an excellent alternative for them. It achieves more comfortable results, with little or no down time, by using a fine jet of water to dislodge fat globules.

Liposoft provides the surgeon with gentle, precise control over fat removal that means refined body-sculpting, without the bruising, prolonged swelling and recovery times of traditional techniques. Liposoft treatments start from $4,500 and a single treatment is required to get your results.

Laser Lipolysis
Laser lipolysis does not take the place of Liposculpture but it’s becoming an established way to improve the appearance of small areas quickly and with minimal discomfort. In fact, it combines the latest liposculpture advances with the precision of laser technology. That’s why it’s best suited to smaller areas such as the face and neck, neck and breasts, plus areas of loose skin and cellulite. Results appear within a week and can continue up for up two to four months after the procedure. Since the laser also assists in collagen shrinkage and skin tightening, it also helps deliver a smooth and more toned finish.
Laser Lipolysis starts from $4,500 and one to three treatments are required for optimal results.

Tumescent Liposculpture
Liposculpture is still the most common cosmetic procedure in Australia apart from breast augmentation. It is possible to treat several areas at once, such as the stomach, thighs and arms. It is not uncommon for significant amounts of fat to be removed during this procedure, leading to significant shape and size changes. This procedure requires a general anaesthetic and day surgery or even overnight stay in a hospital. Prices range from $4,500 to $15,000 depending on extent of the procedure.

Ultrasonic Liposculpture
One of the more aggressive forms of surgical fat reduction, ultrasonic liposculpture uses high frequency sound waves to break down the fat cells and emulsify the fat before removal with a liquid-cooled cannula. It’s really only used in a handful of situations, including on men who may have tougher areas of fat that can be difficult to remove. Ultrasonic Lipsculpture starts from $7,900 depending on the area being treated.

Everybody wants sexy sultry lips and a glamorous pout, but what are the dangers of over filling? When enhancing your lip size, what should you be aiming for and how do you ensure you get the best results?

It can be easy to go over the top with a lip enhancement, like ‘Days Of Our Lives’ star Lisa Rinna (pictured). She is a classic example of a celeb who has taken lip filling to the extreme.

Stress and ageing are all factors that contribute to frown lines forming on your face; unfortunately they are also inevitable factors in life. Ageing celebrities, such as Courteney Cox (pictured), have set the standard for line-free faces, and now many women are following suit, in the pursuit to achieve the same look.

For very few people, this relaxed, stress-free look is naturally embedded in their genes. However there are a variety of procedures, both temporary and permanent, that can deliver a happier, more youthful look.

Dermal Fillers
For those who prefer a less invasive alternative to surgery, dermal fillers are the way to go.

Dermal fillers are suitable for most people, and are injected into the skin to elevate already established depressions, such as frown lines associated with ageing.

The treatment is simple and easy, completed within 15-30 minutes, dependent on your particular needs. Immediately following the procedure, the skin over the treated area may look slightly raised and a little reddened, but you will be pleased to know that the area can be covered with oil-free make-up. Treatment takes approximately 15 minutes, and for those of you who live busy lifestyles, you will be happy to know you can resume normal activities immediately.

Say Farewell To Frown Lines And Forehead Wrinkles, Thanks To This Expert Advice From Cosmetic Surgery Specialist Dr Mark Kohout

Dr. Mark Kohout, RESCU’s Plastic Surgeon, has seen every kind of wrinkle and knows exactly how to freshen up the most furrowed of brows and create a more youthful appearance.

No-one likes wrinkles. But at least crow’s feet and laugh lines around the eyes and mouth can be happily dismissed as the result of a life well lived. Wrinkles on the forehead however tend to be associated with frowning or worrying – two things that make us seem overly serious, tired or worse, downright grumpy.

So, what can be done about those horizontal lines across the forehead and the vertical grooves between the brows known as “elevens” for their resemblance to the numeral?

As we age, the forehead and eyebrows may sag or head south. Frown lines appear due to the action of underlying forehead muscles. These factors lend a heavy and tired look to the forehead and upper eyelids.

Muscle relaxants
No discussion on banishing wrinkles would be complete without mentioning Botox, the most famous of all injectable muscle relaxants, especially when it comes to the vertical lines between the brows. Yes, those pesky “elevens”. Approved by the Australian TGA for use in the treatment of facial wrinkles, it’s very effective in minimising facial lines and wrinkles on the forehead.

Treatment takes only 15 minutes and results last up to six months. You won’t notice the effects immediately because it takes at least a few days to kick in. But interestingly the results actually get better with time. So the more treatments you have, the longer the effects of subsequent injections will last.

Dermal fillers
We’ve spoken about fillers before, but it’s worth mentioning temporary and permanent dermal fillers in the context of forehead wrinkles too. Since these products plump up the skin, they provide an excellent remedy for really deep lines, especially those between the eyebrows that can project a worried and tired look. These fillers take the form of products such as Restylane, Aquamid or even your own fat and we can advise on whether permanent or temporary injectables are best for your needs.

Skin peels
Depending on the depth of wrinkles, you may like to consider a skin peel. They come in a variety of different strengths so your doctor can choose the best formula for your needs. Mild peels, like glycolic, lactic or AHA peels, treat fine wrinkling with minimal or no downtime.

Meanwhile, stronger peels, such as TCA, help reduce the appearance of more significant lines. The five to seven day downtime isn’t too hard to justify when you consider it also addresses uneven pigmentation and a range of other conditions such as acne and dryness to give a smoother, more even tone to skin overall. This is an excellent option if the lines are not too deep and you are looking to improve your skin condition and widespread lines (including around the eyes and mouth.

Brow lift
Another option is an endoscopic browlift to reposition the brow to a higher, more youthful position. This is usually the last option after the above treatments have been considered. It is very effective when the brows have dropped to a point where you are constantly trying to keep them up (and the eyelid skin out of your eyes) so that the forehead lines get deeper and deeper.

Endoscopic browlift can now be done through small “keyhole” incisions within the hairline. As the small muscles of the brow and forehead are lifted, frown lines are weakened. This means the whole area looks smoother giving a brighter, younger look to the entire face.

An endoscopic browlift is usually performed as a day-stay procedure under general anaesthetic or twilight sedation. But if you’re not ready for surgery, there are other options to restoring a youthful, well-rested look and banishing forehead lines.

What woman doesn't want full, sexy lips? Celebrities like Angelina Jolie have led the trend for a plumper pout and now everyone wants this alluring smile. Sydney-based Plastic Surgeon Dr Mark Kohout reveals the latest treatments that can give you luscious lips.

While naturally full lips are a blessing for those who are simply born that way, there are a variety of procedures, both temporary and permanent, that can deliver bestow almost any woman with more pillowy, sensuous lips. Semi-permanent dermal filler
The most popular method of lip enhancement is a non-surgical procedure involving injection with a semi-permanent dermal filler. This kind of injectable product delivers greater lip volume for long-lasting augmentation without surgery.

Dermal fillers can also be used to define the lip line, which is great if you’re experiencing thinning of the upper lip with age. Likewise, vertical lines associated with smoking can be reduced.

There are various semi-permanent injectables and the exact type of dermal filler is selected on a case-by-case basis. Generally the results last for three to six months, which is not bad considering the treatment can be done in about 30 minutes so you can be in and out within a lunch break.

No downtime is required, however skin may be a little reddened immediately following treatment. Oil-free make-up can help disguise any redness until the colour and texture settles, generally within 24 hours.

Semi-permanent dermal fillers produce excellent results, but it’s important to remember they offer only temporary solutions. Lip fullness will slowly decline as the injectable product is absorbed by the body. That’s why most women opt for regular top-ups two or three times a year.

Permanent lip augmentation
For women who have tried injections and enjoyed the lip fullness this achieves, there is always the option of a permanent lip augmentation. We prefer dermis or fat grafts for this procedure and find it very safe.

The results are also highly predictable so you know exactly what to expect. Fat injections use fat tissues taken from a donor site in your body (usually the thighs or buttocks). And because it comes from part of your own body, there is no risk of allergic reaction.

Permanent lip augmentation requires a minor day-surgery procedure and delivers long-lasting results. The injected fat plumps and tightens the skin, reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It can also be topped up if fat is absorbed by the skin as sometimes happens within the first few weeks.

Longer-lasting dermal filler
For those wanting fuller lips for longer but don’t want to commit to a permanent option, Aquamid is a soft-volume filler with immediate results that last. Injected in the same way as temporary fillers, the results last more than 10 years.

And happily the results do not fade over time. Consisting of 97.5 per cent water, Aquamid is biocompatible, non-allergenic and makes the treated area look and feel incredibly soft and natural. We’re seeing excellent results as more women experience this longer-lasting dermal filler.

Sun spots and hyperpigmentation are very ageing. We asked Sydney-based plastic and cosmetic surgeon Dr Mark Kohout how we can roll back the years with non-invasive cosmetic creams and treatments. He also gives preventative advice for more youthful looking skin.

Age spots, sun spots, liver spots, freckles and lentigos – call them what you will, but those brownish skin discolorations or splotches on your skin, are the result of changes in skin pigmentation. That’s what happens when the body produces too much melanin – the compound found in all forms of animal life that gives skin and hair its natural colour – and it darkens the skin, making it blotchy and uneven.

Skin changes are one of the most visible signs of ageing and are related to environmental factors, genetics, medications, hormonal changes, nutrition and the biggest single factor – sun exposure. That’s why age spots most often appear on the hands, face, back and feet.

Those aged 40 years and beyond are more susceptible to age spots and are generally the people looking to get rid of them because around this age the skin tends to regenerate itself more slowly. Slower regeneration, coupled with a sluggish metabolism, causes age spots and other blemishes to occur more often and more noticeably.

Ways to treat pigmentation
The best preventative treatment is of course to stay out of the sun. The majority of age spots are caused by over-exposure to the sun, which damages the skin, leaving it more susceptible to erratic pigmentation. Other sensible choices include wearing protective clothing or sunscreen with a high SPF rating every day.

Resurfacing creams with Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHAs) can help fade age spots along with Retinoids. Retinoids are derived synthetically from Vitamin A, which in high dosages applied directly to the skin causes the body’s natural exfoliating process to accelerate, replacing old skin cells with fresh, new ones.

We will also often use skin lightening creams, which are specifically formulated to decrease the production of pigment in the skin. These lightening creams are usually used in conjunction with vitamin A creams for the best effect.

Other non-invasive and highly effective cosmetic skin treatments for the instant removal of age spots and pigmentation include skin peels or Fraxel laser resurfacing to correct the effects of photo-ageing by removing the upper layers of the skin most affected by the sun. The results of laser resurfacing can be quite spectacular with blotchy pigmentation and sunspots disappearing completely, delivering smooth, clear skin which if maintained with regular care, can stay that way for many years. What’s more, there is minimal downtime or discomfort and only three to five treatments are usually required.

Alternatively, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) photo-rejuvenation treatments use pulsed light to correct a number of benign skin conditions such as freckles, pigmentation and age spots. The major benefit of IPL is that it selectively targets unwanted spots, leaving normal skin unharmed so there is no downtime or prolonged healing.

Better still, IPL stimulates natural collagen production in the skin, rejuvenating the texture of the complexion as it removes pigmentation. For best results, up to three treatments are required at three to four week intervals.
