For Fine Hair

When it comes to extensions there’s plenty of options and Joh suggests sitting down with your stylist and discussing which best suits your hair and your lifestyle. Individual extensions and weaves are most popular but semi-permanent stick ons are making waves in the hair world. They last up to one month and can be washed and blowdried, and are known to cause minimal damage to the hair they are attached too.

For girls with all the time in the world, individual keratin bond extensions are best. Weaves are great also, will require a little less maintenance but need to be combed twice daily from the roots to avoid matting.

For Long Hair

You’ve already got the length and thickness but what’s a sure fire style to make boys swoon? Looking to Hollywood for inspiration, Joh loves a good “Kardashian do”. “Wavy but not curly, flat in the middle with a centre part, very Kim Kardashian and very Victoria’s Secret… I think that look is really happening right now in long hair at the moment,” Joh Said.

Stressing the importance of the end result looking effortless, Joh advises using a GHD to get the wavy look. Forget curling wands and the wrapping techniques you used to use to get curls, with a GHD it’s as simple as curling ribbon on present, Joh advised.

Tips and Tricks for Perfect GHD Curls

Taking big sections, will ensure the waves are big and bouncy not small and sporadic a la 90s high school formal hair.

Joh’s number one curling rule, “The motion of the wrist when creating GHD curls shouldn’t stop,” he said. Starting about 5cm from the crown Joh advises moving the GHD from root top tip (on an angle) in one motion. “Its all about having an age and hair appropriate style, your hair should be well cut and well styled” Joh said. So, whether you’re feeling daring and in need of a dramatic change or just need some styling tips, Joh Bailey has the answers…

The Pixie Chop

Made popular most recently by Harry Potter star and fashion icon, Emma Watson this do is all about effortless sophistication and style. “I think if you’re looking for a new look and you’re young and beautiful you should go for a pixie chop.” Joh Bailey said. Perfect for girls with thinner faces and finer hair, it extenuates your features and gives you a cool and calm demeanour.

Hermione, Emma Watson’s character in Harry Potter always had unruly, long, frizzy locks and never could we imagine that such a sleek short cut could look so good. So how do we know if the chop is right for us? Joh Bailey suggests sitting down with your stylist and discussing your options, and admits the Pixie isn’t for everyone. “Curly haired and round faced girls should steer clear of anything too short,” he said.

The Long Bob

“A shoulder length bob is big news, with a centre part - definitely long, not short,” Joh said. At RESCU we can’t help but think the gorgeous Jennifer Aniston has something to do with this new tress trend – In need of a change she recently opted for a new do, that now everyone is coveting, and do you blame us? Her long bob is super chic, wearable and better again, 100% appropriate for work. According to Joh, this style suits most. It should be brilliant and blunt and no shorter than shoulder length.

RESCU tip: Remember stylists aren’t mind readers and love as many points of reference you can give them! Print off celeb images or take magazine tears to your next appointment to make sure your desired do, isn’t lost in translation.

A Beautiful Blow Dry

We know there isn’t room in everyone’s busy schedules or budgets to get a blow dry twice weekly but for that very special meeting, review or client lunch, “Nothing can beat a beautiful blow dry,” Joh said. When going for a blowdry you don’t need to stick to super straight either, if you’re finding it hard to strike a balance between bed hair and overly straight, ask for a blowdry with some movement. It will be bouncy and fun, with enough sophistication to be taken seriously at work.

Just remember what doesn’t work, “…overly sexy hair, beach hair or bed hair that may look fabulous for a night out but are a big no no for the office,” Joh said.

The Sleek Ponytail

“If you want to keep your hair long and you want to look professional a sleek ponytail is the best way to go,” according to Joh. The perfect pony should sit at mid height, “Not high, not low, right in the middle of the back of your head, a little bit of product, tight, and with a bouncy frizz free tail,” Joh said.

Step By Step Guide To Creating The Perfect Sleek Pony With Joh Bailey

1. The beauty of the sleek ponytail is that you don’t have to start with clean hair. It’s the perfect style for the next day, after a night out. If you feel you need to add some freshness though, Tresemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo ($11.49) can be applied, concentrating on the roots.

2. Next run a blowdryer or straightening iron over the ends that will make the ponytail straight and frizz few.

3. A bit of puff is ok, but the front should be super-sleek. Sebastian Professional do a great gel, Gel Forte ($35) and the tiniest amount should be squeezed into palm of the hand, rubbed together to warm and then patted onto the very front section.

4. With a good stiff brush, brush all the hair into the middle of the back of the head, try to keep it perfect and neat with no bunches.

5. Use a nice thick hair tie to secure, or to add a little extra class adorn with a black ribbon, as seen at Topshop Unique at London Fashion Week A/W 2011.

6. To add sheen to the ponytail, lightly spritz Sebastian Professional Halo Mist ($37) from the hair tie to the ends. Its light reflecting particles with make your hair look silky and shiny.

Joh Bailey's Tips And Tricks For Restoring Damaged Summer Hair

Summer is officially over, and while we are already missing ocean swims, cocktails by the pool and Sunday sessions, our hair is rejoicing! It finally gets a much-needed break from the sun, salt and pre-party heat styling, and after a tough summer we think it’s only fair it gets a little extra TLC.

A hair dresser who ‘gets it’, RESCU resident hair expert/king of hair, Joh Bailey is an advocate for heat styling, colouring and doing the things we love, even though he admits they can be damaging to hair. “What are we going to do? Put up with frizzy, unkempt, lacklustre hair just so we can say that it’s healthy,” he said. It’s all about moderation, not over-doing it and making sure we manage and condition the hair where possible.

RESCU got the low-down on post-summer hair care, with Joh’s tips and tricks to rejuvenate and restore dry, damaged, tired summer hair.

Getting the Chop

At RESCU HQ we avoid haircuts (yes, even the 6 week trim) like the plague. We all want long, luscious locks, but Joh made us realise there is no point holding onto tired, tortured tresses. Advising to part with the maximum amount of hair possible, Joh says a good haircut is the best way to get your damaged summer hair back on track. “I’m not suggesting cutting the hair short, but with a good cut your hair condition will be improved instantly,” he said.

K is for Keratin

Keratin treatments are at the top of Joh’s list for treating damaged hair. “They take the fizzle away, seal ends up and make the hair appear healthier,” he said.

An in-salon smoothing treatment that restores the health of the hair, utilising Keratin protein, which is naturally found in the hair shaft, it replaces what has been lost to the elements, styling or colouring, making the hair look and feel healthy again. The treatment works best on dry, brittle hair as it bonds more easily. The Cons? Joh advised this treatment is quite in depth, time consuming and a little expensive. Start saving for this one girls!

One for the Brunettes

We know we’ve already told you that colouring the hair is bad, and now we’re telling you it can actually help, but we promise we aren’t going crazy. Joh explained for darker haired girls, a really shiny semi-permanent (close to the natural hair colour) is a good way to shine up the hair and fill in the gaps, making it appear healthier and smoother.

Colouring should be done in moderation with at least 4 weeks between each application. A good shampoo and conditioner, tailored to your needs should be used to maintain health and shine. RESCU loves: KMS California Moistrepair Shampoo and conditioner ($26.95)

In Salon Or Take Home Treatment

Take home hair treatments are one of the most effective and affordable ways to replenish locks that have lost their lustre. Joh suggests booking an in-salon treatment first, so that your hair stylist can prescribe a suitable take home treatment (for your individual needs) to use on a weekly basis.

In fashion, as with history, there are events that punctuate a moment in time. In my world, it's hairstyles of the rich and famous that captured the imagination and style of the moment.

Top 10 moments in hair that changed starlets and wannabes into stars:

Coco Chanel and the original power bob. A timeless classic that works even today. Chanel's look gave women freedom and comfort without compromising style. Hair with movement was born. Until this time, hair was teased and styled. Coco introduced us to carefree, modern hair.
Mary Quant and the Vidal Sassoon sharp asymmetric bob. Hair was worn flat and straight for the first time. To this day, this mod look is still called the 'Mary Quant'.
Twiggy and Mia Farrow with the Gamine crop. Boyish, impish and a playful twist on the boy cut. It was previously unheard of in elegant circles to wear hair this short. Both these looks completely amplified the mood of the times.
Jackie Kennedy and her power beehive. Polished and perfect, this look sent millions of women to the hairdresser to have their hair set. Created by Mr Kenneth of the Waldorf Astoria, the legendary celebrity hairdresser of his time, this look single handedly revived hot rollers and hairspray across the globe.
The late Farrah Fawcett's flick. This is my personal favourite. Big and bouncy and all about the perfect cut. Long hair taken to a stylish new level after the hippy years of long, ironed-out hair. Who didn't want that hair?
Linda Evans' power shoulders and wings. This was the look when I first started out in hairdressing and the only look women wanted. No warmth, no life and bleached to grey! This look created a new hairdressing term called frosting.
Bo Derek's perfect 10. Whilst her cornrows are still popular on the streets of Kuta, surprisingly, this was never a look adopted by the ladies who lunched in Double Bay.
Lady Diana Spencer's 'Lady Di'. Before she was the Queen of Hearts, hers was the most copied hairstyle in the world. We're talking pre-wedding, with soft layers and highlights. Every single client, young and old, fronted up with a picture of this infamous do for copying. Perfectly set off by high lace collars and the lady-like chic fashion of the time.
Jennifer Aniston and 'The Rachel' welcomed back the professional blow-dry and layering. Long, layered and very 90's. The effortless girl-next-door look is not easily re-created at home but managed to get everyone back to the hair salon for golden, sun kissed and healthy looking tresses.
Victoria Beckham's POB. This style icon single-handedly boosted hair dressers' earnings with her chop. In a time when everyone favoured long Boho hair (the look she actually made popular with those hair extensions), Posh Spice bucked the trend and emerged with the POB closely followed by the 'chop', a revival of Mia Farrow's gamine cut.
Style tip: some people are up for big changes and others find a look and stay with it. I've always worked with my clients to find their signature cut and help them evolve it through time.

Expert Tips For Creating A Salon-Quality Blow-Dry At Home

Want to look like you’ve just stepped out of a salon every day? Rescu Grooming Expert and celebrity hair stylist Joh Bailey tells RESCU his top tips for the perfect blow-dry, and which celebrities we should look to this season for style inspiration.

RESCU visited Joh Bailey’s new Double Bay salon (as pictured), freshly renovated in glorious Tiffany Blue jewel box tones, to get the lowdown on the best blow dry technique.

Joh’s perfect blow-dry philosophy
This is my signature look; effortless but polished. Shiny, full hair is what I consider to be beautiful hair. I don’t like that US style where it looks like fake hair. I also don’t like hair that’s poker straight, nor too bouncy. I am quite old fashioned when it comes to product. I love hairspray and for fine hair, a heat spray or mousse is good. I also like my blow-dry to last a few days.

The perfect blow-dry is important to me. In my salon, we give our apprentices 8 – 12 months training on just blow-drying before a stylist is allowed to blow-dry.

Tips for creating a professional blow-dry

Choose the right tools

Without the right equipment even I can’t have the right effect. So I recommend:

Brushes that have strong bristles. Italian ‘mira’ brushes are the best.
A good strong blow-dryer with a nozzle.
Sectioning clips.

Take your time
Blow-drying is like polishing hair. You can’t polish a teak table at once! You need to section in small brush-size sections and work one section at a time. This will ensure a perfect, even finish.

Keep the hair hydrated
For the perfect blow-dry, smoothly direct the brush and heat down the hair (never against the shaft). Do this until the hair smoothes out. Don’t go over it too many times, because the hair will burn and go frizzy again. You want to leave some hydration in the hair.

TOP TIP: Never blast hair that’s not wrapped around the brush with air. This just creates frizziness.

Use a quality hairdryer

Joh’s step-by-step guide to achieving the perfect blow-dry at home, plus his recommended products:

Clean well conditioned hair. This is essential. I recommend TRESemme for all budgets and hair types. I also love Wella System Professional products.
Don’t start with dripping hair. Dry (upside down if you have fine hair). I like hair ¾ dry before I get out the brushes.
It takes time. If you’ve only got 5 minutes, try another style or a slick ponytail. You need 20-35 mins for a beautiful blow-dry. Dry shampoo is also a good trick for the time poor.

RESCU: Which blow-dry look should we perfect this season?
If you’ve gone for the POB (The Victoria Beckham bob), you can play with rollers to get a more ladylike finish. Boho has given way to siren. And at the Academy Awards, there were a lot of references to old Italian mod. A smaller brush and some Velcro rollers and blow dry while you are doing your make-up will get this look.

RESCU: You are creating the looks for the Project Runway TV show this season, what’s your vision for the runway shows?
I am part of the designers’ brief. I am a resource for the designers to use as part of their 8-hour challenge. I essentially do whatever the designer asks. It’s up to them to brief me properly, be direct and to make the most of this aspect of the show to create their look. I give the same advice to my clients. Give me the brief, but let me work with you and share my experience and expertise.

Hairdresser Joh Bailey On How To Get Angelic 70s Hair

The 1970s-inspired hair at the Chloe Autumn/Winter 2010 show made us all want to be Charlie’s Angels. To learn how to attain this luscious retro look, we talked to RESCU’s resident hairstylist guru, Joh Bailey, about the secrets to getting sexy, secret agent hair.

RESCU: How do we get hot 70s hair?
Joh Bailey: For hot 70s hair, you need to pull out the hot rollers, curling the hair away from the face. When set, take out the rollers and flip your head upside down, loosening the curls. Hair spray will help hold the look.

RESCU: Is it really that simple?
Joh Bailey: There are a few do’s and don’ts. First, you need to have medium to long hair – at least shoulder length. The hair needs to be layered, especially around the face, and you must only ever use the large rollers. If the rollers are too small, it will end in disaster!

RESCU: Are there any good hair products to really make it amazing?
Joh Bailey: Like all heating products, continued use can really damage your hair. I’d recommend Tresemmè’s Thermal Creation Heat Protection Spray, to keep your hair looking fabulous, even after styling.

It would appear that many of our favourite celebs have been getting the chop lately – hairstyles, that is. With Michelle Williams (pictured), Anne Hathaway and Cate Blanchett losing their locks with striking results, we thought it was time to call in RESCU’s resident hair expert Joh Bailey, to let us know how to make the cut when going the crop.

RESCU: What advice would you give those thinking about making the cut?
Joh Bailey: Short hair is all about confidence. You’ve got to wear it well. If you’re going to make a bold statement like cutting it all off, you need to be prepared to be looked at. If you want to make a fabulous statement, commit to it. Don’t do it in stages, it’s all or nothing.

RESCU: Who does is suit?
Joh Bailey: Short crops look the best on young, fresh faces. From a style perspective, they are best suited for those with hair that is thin to medium thickness, and with heart shaped or oval shaped faces. This is not a look for thick, curly hair.

RESCU: How do you keep it looking great?
Joh Bailey: The best thing about short hair is that it is easy to style and easy to look after, but you do need to cut it regularly. A trim every 4 to 6 weeks, depending on your hair growth, is a must, and you need to have a really good cut to begin with. It’s quick to wash and blow-dry, and you can leave the house each morning looking great with minimal fuss.

Hair adornment is a great way to revive your look and add that extra touch of individuality. RESCU took advice from our resident hair expert Joh Bailey on how to work different styles of hair adornment for Spring.

The latest hair trend- adornment

Lately the runway shows have revealed that hair adornment is going to be a huge look for Spring. From wearing a headscarf to a more daring look, such as embellished hair pieces, this popular trend is easy to wear if you follow some key rules.

How to perfect this look without looking childlike

I think it’s important to borrow from the runway looks but not try and copy them completely. The runway is a nod towards a look, but not something you would entirely want to copy. In saying that, this trend is also a very personal thing and some people can carry off a runway look everyday. So, to interpret it right for you, it’s just a matter of wearing the right head scarf or the right adornment, and importantly, choosing where you will wear it.

What hairstyles this trend suits best

There isn’t one particular hair style that the hair adornment trend suits best. It actually works well on both short and long hair styles. But a key point to remember, is to not allow hair and accessories to compete- they should work well together.

Where to shop for the hair adornment trend

I don’t think you can ever go past a Hermes scarf. You can do so many different amazing things with something key like that. But, good news for most of us, you can also get the look from stores like Sportsgirl or Diva.

Many of us wish we could get the perfect celebrity hair like Jennifer Hawkins, but we don’t know where to start. So naturally RESCU asked Joh Bailey, our resident hair and grooming expert, on how to perfect the Demi, Jen or Elle.

It’s all about having long hair with these three celebrity looks. If you don’t have long hair, you can cheat it with hair extensions. Only use individual human hair extensions if you want a natural sexy look.

How to get perfect dead straight long hair- “The Demi Moore”

This sleek and straight look is all about the right hair and the right tools. Make sure you have a good condition and trim. This look is best for medium to thick hair and will suit a round or broad face as it slims the face and has no height.

How to get the look:

My tips for achieving this look is by finger drying your hair with the blow dryer, whilst you stretch the hair gently. Once dry, go over your hair section by section with a hot iron.

How to get loose beach waves like Jennifer Hawkins

My cheat guide to creating Jennifer Hawkins gorgeous loose waves: go for a salt water swim and let your hair dry in the sun. This creates a separated, frizz free, beach babe look.

How to get the look:

If the beach is out of the question for you, you can also perfect this look at home. You don’t need clean hair, but make sure you wet the hair to prepare the look. I suggest adding in a styling product, either TIGI Beach Hair for oily hair or TRESemme Volumising Mousse for damaged or dry hair.

I would achieve this look by plaiting the hair from the ears down into 6 plaits. My tip would be to plait 2 at the nape of the neck and 4 around the head, leaving the crown flat. You should then fasten the ends of the hair with rubber bands and crimp down each plait with a hot iron to set.

Next, unravel the hair and shake it out gently. I suggest then rubbing a 10c piece size of Wella SP Pearl Smooth through the hair for extra glow.

How to get the look:

To achieve this look you need a layered haircut and plenty of hair extensions on the back and sides. I suggest simply tipping your hair upside down and drying off. Next, divide your hair into sections using clips and wrap your hair around a straightener for 2 seconds per section.

Finally, I would set the hair with Sebastian Shaper Zero Gravity Spray.
