Runway to Reality: Sydney Photographer Shahram Zadgan’s Vintage Spin on RAFW

RESCU Chats to Photographer Shahram Zadgan on his photo reportage of Rosemount Australian Fashion Week.

RESCU: How have you shot these images?
Shahram Zadgan: This year for RAFW I decided to shoot the event in my own style rather than using digital cameras taking the same old style of photos which all the other photographers were fighting amongst each other to capture.

RESCU: What made you shoot in this style?
Shahram Zadgan: For me it was not fulfilling and creative enough to just shoot the event in the same way that I previously had and the same way other backstage and pit photographers who document this event. This year, I decided to shoot backstage and runway entirely on film, in my own style.

RESCU: Why film?
Shahram Zadgan: I still shoot film and have for many years, so it was natural for me to shoot RAFW in this way. Fashion Week is a great subject to capture in terms of colours, clothes, excitement, beautiful people, intensity and atmosphere.

RESCU: What techniques did you use?
Shahram Zadgan: I photographed RAFW all on film using analogue manual 35mm cameras from the 70's - 80's, including Lomo cameras. There is no digital manipulation, all images were created in camera on film. I used long exposures and multiple exposures to capture the movement and the feeling of models floating down the runway. The multiple exposures of the models walking on the catwalk were taken with the beat of the music.

RESCU: How did you get the overlaying effects?
Shahram Zadgan: I mixed Sydney urban cityscapes and iconic architecture with fashion to create paintings rather than photographs. Also, the single exposure portraits of the models were more impressionistic, so they appear soft and romantic. I like images that have imperfections, that are raw, very colourful and seem to have more impact. I feel that today with the use of digital cameras there are a lot of images around us that are perfect yet surprisingly not that interesting. They can lack soul.

RESCU: What were your favorite shows from RAFW 2011?
Shahram Zadgan: Napoleon Perdis’ team arranged a lot of great back stage access to his shows and he is famous for his use of colour and creating theatre. I also had access to runway but outside of the photographers pit through friends in the industry. This series captures backstage and runway from Alex Perry, Gary Bigeni, Christopher Esber, Toni Maticevski, Kooey, and Romance was Born.

RESCU: So what next?
Shahram Zadgan: In the near future, I will be having an exhibition of this series.
