· Think about where you want to go and why

· If swapping with kids, swap with another family who have a kid friendly home

· It's a bit like online dating- it's all about communication.

· Expect to exchange at least 6-8 emails and I always suggest you skype and talk through the details before making final commitments.

· Ask questions like: What state will the house be in? Do you have or provide a maid and if so who pays them?

· Security is a big factor and I always suggest people befriend each other on Facebook before a swap. This lets you see their friends and ensure they are real!

· Check with your insurance and advise them of the house swap. You are covered only if you TELL them.

· Develop a 'users' manual for your home including information about the area and the nitty gritty like security codes, dealing with garbage, local transport and places of interest.

· Always have a friend or family member meet your house swap guest with keys for a tour of the property and handover.

· Make sure you leave space for the guests in the fridge, pantry and closets

· Leave an easy to follow emergency contact list

· Remember: It cuts both ways and respect is reciprocal!

Okay, we admit it. The lastminute lovelies are more than a little bit in love with KL. From laksa to Lanvin, TopShop to temples, Malaysia’s buzzing multicultural metropolis really does have it all.
One of Malaysia’s most famous exports and favourite of Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw no less, Jimmy Choo, provided us with his recommendations for a KL trip to remember:

Pampering galore: After a day of sightseeing, you deserve some pampering. Kuala Lumpur’s fish spas are an ... unusual way to give your feet some much needed attention. It’s very tickly but VERY effective.
Lovelies tip – Persevere! By the end you’ll be guiding the fishies to missed spots … or maybe that’s just me.

Shoe shopping: Everyone asks where to get Kuala Lumpur’s best shoes and of course, I’m a little biased. I recommend the Jimmy Choo store in Suria KLCC at the base of the Petronas Towers. Fion Poon in Central Market is also a fab spot for something a little less pricey.
Lovelies tip – Keep smiling and bargain hard at markets. It’s a game you should play.

Cooking is the new black: If you want to wow your friends at home you can’t beat a Malaysian cooking class at Bayan Indah cooking school – it’s an unforgettable and very worthwhile experience.
Lovelies tip – You can pick up great Malaysian serving dishes at the markets to make your experience at home authentic.

A meal to impress: For a night to remember, I take guests to Le Yen at the Ritz Carlton, which is hands down one of Kuala Lumpur’s most stylish and unique restaurants. You must start with a drink in the Ritz’s cosy lounge bar.
Lovelies tip – Be wary in heels! Sidewalks in Asia can be dangerous... You don’t want to trip out of the Ritz after a few champas!

If you’re feeling thirsty: Another watering hole with wow factor is Luna Bar, an ultra chic roof-top bar with an illuminated pool in the centre. You can’t beat the views of the city at night... just gorgeous.
Lovelies tip – It can get really muggy in KL especially in rooftop bars. Pack face powder so you can relax and enjoy the view.

Have credit, will travel
If we’ve inspired you to consider KL, might we suggest coinciding your visit with the major shopping sales period?
Let’s face it, the opportunity to incorporate a good dose of retail therapy is often a prerequisite for a happy holiday. If this is your kind of thinking too then the Malaysia’s Mega Sale Carnival from 15 June to 31 August in 2012 should be in your diary.
It’s the granddaddy of sales, and the best time for the committed shopper to head to KL and snap-up lust-worthy brands such as Gucci, Armani and Fendi. Stores outdo each other's price cuts and offer shoppers ridiculously generous gifts with purchases. What’s not to love?

With the Aussie dollar going strong, the increased bang-for-your-travel-buck is giving people a greater opportunity to make overseas holidays a more frequent occurrence. Neil Perry: Claridge’s is located right in the heart of Mayfair, arguably London’s best shopping district – tantalizingly close to Oxford St, Regent St, Marlebone, High St and Soho. If you are looking for a location that promises a true London experience, Claridge’s cannot be beat.

If you like old world charm and perfect British hospitality then you will feel right at home here. The rooms are elegant, yet comfortable, charming yet sophisticated.

High Tea at Claridge’s is not to be missed. Held in the opulent Art Deco foyer, High Tea is a classic English tradition that is executed so perfectly in this hotel it makes you feel like royalty. I would be remiss not to mention the signature restaurant of Gordon Ramsay, that infamous, foul-mouthed celebrity chef. And, if you need a place to hole-up for a late night cocktail dinner, the hotel bar is very good.

This week Aussie actress Rose Byrne reviews L’Ermitage in Beverly Hills, California for Kiwi Collection.

Rose Byrne: L’Ermitage is tucked away on a tree-lined residential street not far from Rodeo Drive. The best words to describe this hotel are lovely, clean, calm and quiet. It is not a scene, nor achingly hip, but rather a serene escape from the madness of LA.

The service was great. It never felt overrun or over wrought. The staff I dealt with was easy going and dignified.

If you want high-octane bars, people and noise then L’Ermitage is not your place. However, if you want cool,

calm and collected, then this hotel is great.

I saw Carine Roitfeld in the elevator once. That is a stamp of cool in a far superior way.

Marc Newson: This 19th century residence hotel is located in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Milan, yet just far enough away from the crowds to relax.

It is an ideal place to stay if you are looking to shop in the fashion district – specifically Monte Napoleone - admire the famous Duomo or enjoy a night out at La Scala Opera. The decor is fairly inconsistent from room to room. The hotel was recently renovated but to be honest I preferred the hotel’s original facade. The hotel bar is great. The staff were very obliging and especially helpful in finding
restaurants nearby.

In Milan, Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper exhibited at the Cenacolo Vinciano Museum is a must see.

David Whitehill, former dolphin trainer, marine wildlife activist and TV personality, spoke to RESCU about travelling the Australian coastline, the best places to take the kids for a summer holiday and the secret to scuba diving.

RESCU: What is the best way to experience travelling the coastline of Australia?
David Whitehill: We all know Australia is a huge place so flying into a destination and getting amongst it once you are there is the best way to utilise your holiday time.

RESCU: Where is the best place to visit for a diverse range of marine wildlife?
David Whitehill: I’m caught between The Great Barrier Reef, Tasmania, and the south west corner of WA. Recently I have been exploring Sydney and have been amazed at the amount and quality of marine life. We have a beautiful international city only a stones throw from the ocean, it’s really opened my eyes.

RESCU: Where are your top 3 places to visit?
David Whitehill: I love North Stradbroke Island off Brisbane. I’ve been holidaying there since I was young and the surf, beaches and lifestyle makes for a perfect escape.

Thailand is quite amazing because of the variety of experiences you can have, all above board of course. It’s cheap, the food is sensational, and the people are really welcoming. There’s some great diving in warm tropical waters.

Fiji has got to be my pick though. Surf, island life and superb diving. This is the kind of place where the visibility seems to go on forever and you forget you’re underwater. Easy flight from Australia’s east coast straight into relax mode.

RESCU: What advice do you give to tourists who are scuba diving for the first time?
David Whitehill: Be calm. Scuba diving is about slowing your body and mind down and just enjoying this entirely different world. It’s foreign at first, but if you can trust your gear and go with someone who is helpful and understands that you could be a touch apprehensive, you’ll be hooked. First timers will probably enjoy a dive in warmer water (22 degrees plus) a little more because it takes away that cold factor.

RESCU: How can children travelling with their parents experience marine life on the coastline?
David Whitehill: Australia is the biggest island on the planet so we have some serious coastline. Explore the rock pools, get into the ocean, and start to build a love for this incredible asset we have. Snorkeling is something that is virtually free and the whole family can do together, and make sure you swim on patrolled beaches in between the flags if you’re not super confident in the water. The ocean can be unforgiving, but that’s why we love it!

Collette Dinnigan:Walking into the palace wing is like stepping back in time. The hotel’s décor is a mix of colonial and Indian palace. It is both charming and magical. The pool is simply magnificent, there really is none other like it in the world.

The old wing has been restored immaculately and hasn’t lost any of its charm – it just feels much fresher. My suite was grand. However, I must admit they modernized the interiors a bit too much for my liking. Having said that, they have done a wonderful job with the marble and mosaics in the bathrooms.

The Taj Mahal is a truly iconic hotel. It is the place to meet and simply just be.

Natalie Bloom: Lawson Grove Shop - hidden down a tiny cul de sac, this breakfast spot is South Yarra’s best-kept secret!

RESCU: Where would you take a tourist?
Natalie Bloom:
1. Heide Museum of Modern Art - I find strolling the tranquil grounds of this indoor and outdoor art space to be both therapeutic and inspiring.
2. Gertrude Street, Fitzroy – you’ll find some of the best restaurants and cafes down this strip, not to mention quirky little shops with beautiful vintage and one-off pieces. I could spend a whole day wandering along this street!
3. Melbourne’s GPO is home to some of Australia’s top designers, and leading international designers too. You’ll find Acne, Willow, Akira and more! The Heritage-listed building is just beautiful too.

RESCU: Where can we find a great coffee blend?
Natalie Bloom: De Clieu on Gertrude Street, Fitzroy. They serve iconic Seven Seeds coffee.

RESCU: Where can we find the best facial?
Natalie Bloom: For an indulgent treat, I always visit Valli at Herbario in Prahran (222 Chapel Street, Prahran, Ph: 03 9529 6320). You have to experience it to believe just how wonderful it is!

RESCU: Where should we stop by for some retail therapy?
Natalie Bloom: Despite being overtaken by many chain stores, Chapel Street is still my pick for Melbourne’s best boutique shopping. With destinations like sass & bide, Gorman and Dinosaur Designs, I can always count on finding something special. Oh and our beautiful flagship store calls this strip home too!

RESCU: Where can we spend the day with our kids?
Natalie Bloom: When the kids were younger we would take them to a park on Cowderoy Street in St Kilda, where there was a coffee shop located on the corner! My husband and I would enjoy coffee while watching our kids play – this place was like a saviour!

RESCU: What is your favourite romantic restaurant?
Natalie Bloom: Being a lover of all things France, I just can’t go past France-Soir in South Yarra. This narrow, dimly lit restaurant with an intimate atmosphere and lengthy wine list is perfect for any special occasion.

RESCU: Where can we go for some great art?
Natalie Bloom: Block Projects Gallery in Cremorne is a conceptual exhibition space housing many works by the late David Band, a friend and an amazing artist. David’s work also adorns our Bloom Organics packaging. His use of bold colours and graphic forms makes my heart skip a beat each time I look at his work.

RESCU spoke to Dr David Hillman, Travelodge sleep expert and chairman of the Sleep Health Foundation, about how to deal with jet lag and avoid upsetting your body clock so that you get a good night sleep when on holidays.

RESCU: When on holidays, how should you alter your sleep patterns if there is a big time difference between home and the destination?
David Hillman: If away from home for only a day or two, it makes sense to keep sleep and wake times as close as is practical to home time, as it takes several days for the jet lag related adjustments in the internal body clock to occur. If planning to be away longer then adjusting sleep and wake times to time at the destination should be done as soon as possible. Use the travel time to start to do this. For example, if your flight is to arrive at your destination in the morning, try to doze or sleep during the flight to allow you to stay awake until evening at your destination. The sooner you establish a pattern of sleeping at night and avoiding naps during the day in the new time zone, the sooner jet lag will recede

RESCU: How should you alter your sleep patterns when there is a small time difference between home and the destination?
David Hillman: The same rules apply, although the smaller adjustments are much easier to make. If only away from home for a day or two, stay on home time: try to eat when you would usually eat at home, try to sleep when you would usually sleep at home and try to not go outside into the sunlight when it is dark at home.

RESCU: What advice can you give regarding children and settling them with jetlag and sleep?
David Hillman: When travelling with children help them get into a routine of wakefulness during the daylight hours and sleep at night at the new destination. The rules that apply to adults for minimising jet lag also apply to children, only their sleep requirements are longer. If a nap is required in the afternoon (as is usually the case for infants and small children) do not allow it to be excessively long: be guided by the length of daytime nap required at home.

RESCU: Do you have any tips for people who live in a noisy house or neighbourhood?
David Hillman: A quiet comfortable bedroom, at the right temperature and with good light exclusion helps sleep. Some people are more sensitive to environmental noise than others. Good quality ear plugs can help and are relatively inexpensive. Changing bedrooms to a quieter part of the house might help as might dealing with the source of the noise, if possible (for example by switching the phone to silent mode, or getting your partner’s snoring seen to). If noise from outside the house remains a problem more expensive solutions, such as double glazing (at least for the bedroom), could be considered. Understandably, moving house is a last resort, but needs to be considered if sleep is regularly disturbed.

Ten Tips For A Better Slumber:

1. Set the mood for slumber
Your room should be quiet and dark. Before you go to sleep, be sure to turn off the lights and any other stimuli such as the TV and completely close your blinds or curtains.

2. Sleep in a clean and pleasant environment
A mess-free and uncluttered room will help aide a clear and undistracted mind. Spend just a few minutes each night tidying your bedroom before you get into bed.

3. Get the room temperature right
There’s nothing worse than a freezing cold bedroom at night. An hour before you’re ready to hit the sack, get your room temperature right by closing the windows and adjusting the air conditioner or heater in winter.

4. Avoid interruptions
Switch your phone to silent mode so if it rings or you get a message you won’t be woken. If your partner is noisy then ear plugs can help block out the snoring or restless noises. Similarly eye masks are a great sleep companion whether at home or away, to help eliminate light and movement.

5. Choose the right bed and bedding
It’s essential to have the right bed and bedding.

6. Manage jet lag
If you’re travelling across time zones, help your body clock adapt more quickly to the time at your destination by adjusting your watch and phone as soon as you get on the plane.

7. Bring a piece of home with you
For some, sleeping in unfamiliar surroundings is difficult, no matter how comfortable it is. Keep to familiar routines. Bringing a few personal items from home (e.g. a photograph, a mug, reading material) may help you to relax and bring familiarity to your new location.

8. Wind down and relax before bed
Have a buffer zone before bedtime. Sort out any problems well before going to bed. This may mean setting aside ‘worry time’ during the day.

9. Spend the right amount of time in bed
Most adults need about eight hours sleep every night.

10. Things to avoid…
Alcohol, Caffeine (tea, coffee, cola drinks). Steer clear of sleeping pills except in exceptional circumstances and as advised by your doctor, they won’t fix the cause of your sleeping problem.

Boasting over five fabulous hikes that include some spectacular surrounds such as Mt Feathertop and Mt Bogong, Bright Victoria claims to be the home of hiking. For a shorter trek in the Dandenong Ranges, Ned’s Gully Circuit offers around 4 hours of hiking heaven.

SA
The Adelaide Hills are not only beautiful, but they offer a range of superb trails to awaken the hiker in you, and best of all, they’re so close to the city. Starting at Bellair Railway Station, Yurebilla, which boasts small arts and crafts stores along the way, can be walked in its entirety in three days or taken in half-day chunks. For the truly enthused, Kidman’s Trail offers a 225km spectacular experience that can be covered by foot, horse or cycle and encompasses some of the best and most beautiful regions South Australia has to offer.

WA
Western Australia is not only incredibly large, but its natural beauty and habitats are diverse, making it an adventure playground for the happy hiker. QLD
