SLAM Summer Beach Volleyball Festival is landing at Scarborough on Sunday 15th January. More than just a beach volleyball comp’, this is a travelling festival which drops in on the best beaches around the country and features one hell of a party.

Attendees and participants will be treated to a display of both amateur and elite volleyball in the round robin competition of three levels; The Cup, The Plate and The Bowl, with trophies and giveaways in each section up for grabs. Following on from what has been a successful year for the multicultural broadcaster—thanks in large to the unexpected success of Go Back to Where You Came From—RESCU got a special sneak peak at the summer line-up, and it’s going to be hot! For food-lovers, Peter Kuruvita’s My Sri Lanka shows off both chef Peter’s warm-hearted personality as well as some spicy sensations from his ancestral home. Owner of Sydney’s famed Flying Fish restaurant, Kurivita’s seafood recipes have long tantalised the taste-buds of Sydney-siders, and now his secrets are being shared in a unique cooking show adventure, which reveals as much about the richness of the Sri Lankan spirit as it does the food. If you enjoy Food Safari, this is sure to satisfy your appetite for further food discovery.

The Family transforms 100 days of vision, caught by fixed cameras set inside an Australian family home, into a revealing documentary series. Unlike other ‘reality’ style capturings, the footage here is raw, and the participants live a seemingly average life, yet the result is anything but. Beautifully edited and surprisingly engaging, The Family manages to reveal some extraordinary truths about the ordinariness of life.

For lovers of drama, The Promise is a powerful series from BAFTA award-winning director Peter Kominsky. Following the life of a London-born teenager who retraces her grandfather’s steps through history, the path that is taken provides a moving and engaging account of the historical atrocities he witnessed in Palestine in the 1940s. Although a work of fiction, Kominsky’s attention to historic detail is impressive, and the true story from which it is inspired adds weight to this gripping piece.

For those seeking offbeat entertainment, comedy series Danger 5, which conjures up a Thunderbirds meets Austin Powers feel, will certainly be an audience divider. As five secret agents set out to kill Hitler, apparently in the 1960s, many will cheer and others will sneer, for this ‘love it or leave it’ cult show. Regardless of where you stand, you’ll no doubt appreciate the risk it takes—a refreshing sight for creativity on homegrown TV.

And for those who dream of a life more glamorous, the new talent quest and cultural exposé, Bollywood Star, will have you entranced, right down to the very last glittering sequin. This upbeat series attempts to reveal the serious challenges on the way to Bollywood superstardom, and does so through a colourful cast of would-be stars and judges.

Sundae Sessions At Openair Cinemas

Ben & Jerry’s and Tunes for Change have partnered up to bring Australia’s finest bands centre together to raise funds and awareness for charity.

The opening night of Sundae Sessions at Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinemas will feature Aussie band Kisschasy in Brisbane, Kate Miller-Heidke in Melbourne, and a soon to be confirmed act in Sydney, with Hungry Kids of Hungary supporting in all states.

The Sundae Sessions will run from October 2011 every Sunday and will be filled with Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, great music and films.

You can catch films such as Red Dog and Life In A Day and enjoy gourmet- style food and beverages from the licensed bar.

Learn To Sew

While the knitting fad seems to have lost a stitch, the latest fashionable creative outlet appears to be increasingly popular ‘learn to sew’ classes. Perhaps it’s inspired by Project Runway, or possibly the driving force comes from leaving the nest and realising the cost of caring for garments; regardless, knowing your way around a sewing machine (and, dare I say, a haberdashery store) offers endless possibilities, from the humble hem to haute couture.

RESCU hunted down some of the hottest classes in town, sew you can get stitching.

The Beginner

Even Valentino had to start somewhere, right? Well, if you know not your bobbins from your backstitch, then a beginner’s class is the best place to, well, begin. Learning to sew can be a great cost-saver, and thankfully classes held at community colleges, and in the community, are also light on the purse.

Sydney Community College offers Sew Simple, a 12-hour machine basics course, for $205.00.

Artspark in inner west Rozelle offers a course of five 2-hour adult workshops for $130.00 (and they offer sewing birthday parties; presumably for children!).

Or, if you have specific aims, the Sew Inn classes held by fabric favourite Tessuti Fabrics in Melbourne deal specifically with areas such as sleeves, or transforming high street clothing into the perfect fit for your body.

The Intermediate

When you’re starting to master the basics, it might be time to really unleash your creativity with some intermediate courses, with skills such as pattern making, or even a more specialised field such as millenary.

You’ll find some interesting short-course options at TAFE NSW and Melbourne’s Designer Stich; or learn the art of Millinery with Jane Stoddart.

The Budding Designer

If learning to sew has you unable to stop, perhaps it’s time to think about a career in fashion and design. TAFEs, colleges and specialist design schools offer a range of intensive and professional courses that could get you runway ready.

For full time courses, Sydney-siders should check out The Fashion Institute, FBI Fashion College or the Whitehouse Institute of Design (which also has a Melbourne Campus).

If you’re in Melbourne, you may want to visit the Melbourne Fashion Institute, Melbourne School of Fashion, or even RMIT.
